MOT managers to benefit from “new clearer guidance”, agency claims

The DVSA has this week launched a new “easy-to-use” garage manager guide detailing management systems, policies and checks that must be in place at MOT test stations.

The ‘Manage your MOT centre’ guide is shorter and easier to read than previous guidance for MOT managers and features concise information on how to manage garages.

The new guide, which covers 15 areas under five main sections, follows an extensive process of reviewing and re-drafting the existing guidance.

Neil Barlow, head of vehicle engineering at the DVSA, said: “DVSA’s priority is to help everyone keep their vehicle safe to drive.

“Feedback from MOT testers and garages showed that the previous information they needed to make sure their garages worked effectively was difficult to use.

“We’ve listened and brought everything they need into one place so it can be easily accessed.

“I’m sure testers and managers will find this much better.”

  • Putting management systems in place
  • Checking and managing MOT test standards
  • Managing MOT testers
  • Maintaining and monitoring premises and equipment
  • Understanding your MOT centre risk rating

At an MOT trade user group at the end of May, members reviewed a draft version and feedback was adopted to make improvements.

Over 90 per cent of industry representatives involved said they would recommend the guide to colleagues.

Penalties for failing to meet the required standards depend on how serious the issues are but the DVSA can ban managers from running an MOT centre for up to five years in the most serious cases.
