No official word yet on a further MOT expiry extension but industry experts say it’s unlikely
MOT testing stations can remain open for tests during new lockdown measures due to come into force in England later this week, the DVSA has confirmed.
In a statement, the DVSA said: “From Thursday 5 November, the government is introducing new national restrictions in England to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
“MOT garages can remain open.
“To help ensure MOT testing can be conducted safely, you can read our guidance for MOT testers about operating safely during coronavirus.”
The DVSA has also today confirmed that heavy vehicle testing will not be affected by new restrictions.

The agency has declined to comment on a possible reintroduction of an extension to MOT expiry dates, as was seen during the UK’s initial lockdown earlier this year.
Stuart James, chief executive of the Independent Garage Association said: “Garages are still busy catching up with the backlog of MOTs that the extension caused earlier this year.
“A second extension would only cause confusion among consumers and put law-abiding vehicle owners at risk of significant fines by leaving cars unchecked.”
It comes as England faces a new national lockdown from Thursday 5 November after a rapid rise in coronavirus cases.
The new measures will replace local restrictions and are expected to apply nationally for four weeks up to Wednesday 2 December – although Cabinet Minister Michael Gove admitted it may be extended beyond this date on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show.
The latest restrictions will require people to stay at home, except for specific purposes and will force certain businesses and venues to close once again.
