GS Yuasa named Boeing Supplier of the Year for innovation

GS Yuasa has been recognised with the 2018 Boeing Company “Supplier of the Year” award in the category of innovation.

Battery manufacturer commended for high-performance lithium-ion cells for space.

The manufacturer was also recognised for its outstanding technical support and contribution to current and future space programs.

GS Yuasa entered into a long-term agreement with Boeing in 2016 and since then the manufacturer has been supplying a range of space qualified lithium-ion battery cells for the leading aerospace company.

GS Yuasa lithium-ion batteries were recognised by Boeing at the 2019 Boeing Global Supplier Conference in Los Angeles, California for their exceptional performance, deployment capability and scalability.

Curtis Aldrich, the president of GS Yuasa Lithium Power commented: “We are humbled to be the recipient of this honour.

“The recognition of our ongoing commitment to excellence is truly appreciated.

“This award recognises not only the hard work of the GS Yuasa team to provide best-in-class products and service, but also acknowledges GS Yuasa’s vision of continual enhancement of our space qualified cell portfolio.”

Working with Boeing to understand the mission requirements of their satellite platforms, GS Yuasa is instrumental in providing high performance energy solutions.

The large format lithium-ion cells are used to support Boeing’s commercial and government programs across multiple satellite platforms and power classes, including providing key engineering support services for the International Space Station.

GS Yuasa has also provided aviation power solutions for Boeing, most notably the state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

GS Yuasa lithium-ion batteries have been providing reliable, high-performance power on orbit since the early 2000’s.

Installed on over 180 spacecraft built in Japan and overseas, the specialist batteries have high energy density and long life.

They boast a track record of being installed in numerous high-profile, special applications, from 6,500m below in the ocean to 36,000km high in space.

The isolated and extreme nature of these inaccessible environments demand the highest levels of reliability.

As Boeing’s satellite platforms grow and evolve, the energy required to power such applications will also increase.

GS Yuasa has therefore developed a technology roadmap in anticipation to meet this exciting challenge.

Further lithium-ion cells will be deployed across Boeing’s Geostationary and Low and Medium Earth Orbit satellite portfolios.
